In today's world, where technology is becoming increasingly embedded in everyday life at an unprecedented pace, smart housing has emerged as an indispensable necessity for the future of human habitation. This transformation extends beyond simple automation and enhanced convenience, creating living environments capable of intelligently recognizing users' needs, optimizing resource utilization, and significantly improving quality of life while addressing the complex challenges of the twenty-first century. Achieving this vision, however, requires a systematic and comprehensive understanding of the internal complexity of the smart housing ecosystem.
Accordingly, this study aims to identify and systematically review smart housing indicators, classify them, and develop an IPO (Input-Process-Output)-based conceptual framework for organizing these indicators. This study adopts a review research design. Data were collected through a systematic literature review and analyzed using categorical content analysis.
The findings identified five principal dimensions of smart housing: environmental sustainability and energy efficiency; technical performance and smart building infrastructure; digital security and trust; user-centeredness and residential quality of life; and governance and economic value. The systematic review of the Scopus database demonstrates that smart housing indicators can be organized within a coherent Input-Process-Output (IPO) framework. User-centered input indicators, including technology acceptance, perceived ease of use, compatibility with users' lifestyles, and quality-of-life enhancement, provide the foundation for intelligent processes such as technical efficiency, infrastructure integration, digital security, and smart monitoring. These processes ultimately generate meaningful outcomes at both micro and macro levels, including improved quality of life, enhanced service transparency, increased economic value, environmental sustainability, and greater energy efficiency.
Furthermore, the findings indicate that the concept of smart housing extends beyond the mere adoption of advanced technologies within residential buildings. Rather, it is defined through the dynamic interaction among environmental sustainability, technical performance, digital security, user-centeredness, and urban governance, which together shape a comprehensive and integrated smart housing ecosystem.
