Research on space syntax has expanded significantly in recent decades; however, a comprehensive understanding of its knowledge structure, thematic development, and scientific collaboration patterns remains limited. This study maps the scientific landscape of space syntax research within urban studies using scientometric and network analysis methods. A systematic review was conducted using data extracted from the Scopus database. After screening and refinement, 739 articles were selected for analysis. Data were examined with VOSviewer based on keyword co-occurrence, link strength, normalized citations, and country co-authorship networks.
The results indicate a steady increase in scientific output, with accelerated growth between 2017 and 2022. Keyword network analysis identified five major thematic clusters: urban planning and spatial analysis; spatial theory and configuration; urban morphology and development; architecture and the built environment; and visibility analysis and spatial tools. “Space Syntax” and “Spatial Analysis” emerged as the central concepts of the field, showing the strongest network connections and link strength.
Citation analysis revealed that studies on urban planning, urban design, and land use, despite their lower frequency, achieved greater scientific impact. At the international level, China and the United Kingdom produced the highest number of publications, whereas the United States, Italy, and the Netherlands occupied more central positions within scientific collaboration networks. These findings suggest that scientific influence is shaped not only by publication output but also by the strength of collaborative relationships.
Overall, the results indicate that space syntax has reached a stage of scientific maturity. Its development is shifting from theoretical advancement toward interdisciplinary, data-driven, and problem-oriented applications in urban studies and planning. By outlining research trends, thematic structures, and collaboration patterns, this study enhances understanding of the field’s evolution and identifies directions for future space syntax research.
