English

In recent decades, increasing attention has been paid to the role of collective rituals in revitalizing urban spaces and fostering social cohesion, particularly in Middle Eastern cities. This study investigates how religious rituals contribute to spatial regeneration, the strengthening of social capital, and the formation of cultural identity within the urban fabric of Javadieh, Tehran. Employing a qualitative approach and a case study strategy, data were collected through 19 semi-structured interviews with residents and ritual organizers, complemented by field observations. Thematic analysis was conducted using MAXQDA 2022. The results revealed that rituals temporarily transform everyday spaces, enhance spatial vitality, and rebuild social relationships by fostering trust and solidarity among residents. Moreover, rituals act as mechanisms of collective memory, reinforcing the neighborhood’s cultural identity. However, the lack of institutional support and formal participatory frameworks poses challenges to the sustainability of these processes. The findings highlight the importance of community-based approaches in urban policymaking and underscore the need to recognize rituals as cultural assets and tools for urban regeneration. By providing an interdisciplinary perspective on the interrelation of space, ritual, and society, this study offers new insights into the cultural dynamics of contemporary cities.
